I can’t imagine anyone who might stop by here is unfamiliar with Malec, but just in case.
Back in the old days, we signified relationships by using a backslash, thus: Buffy/Angel or B/A. In this case, the relationship between Magnus and Alec Lightwood would be Magnus/Alec or M/A.
Alec is a young Shadowhunter–in the TV show, about 20 years old. He’s human, and gay, although in the beginning he’s not at all out, even to himself. He has been in love with his best friend and parabatai (brother, basically) for years, but it has never been a problem until the arrival of Clary Fray/Fairchild into his universe.Suddenly, he has a rival for Jace’s affection, and what he truly feels for his adoptive brother starts to come to the surface.
Enter sexy, sexy warlock Magnus Bane. Magnus is unabashedly flirtatious, and the first moment Alec appears in his line of sight, he is smitten. And makes no bones about it. Over the course of season 1, Magnus–who is breaking out of his own defensive shell, I might add–pries little Alec’s heart open like an oyster…for the juicy, yummy meat inside. I hate oysters, but I LOVE that visual. They share some truly funny and heart-wrenching scenes, until the MOMENT of MOMENTS in their namesake episode, S01xE12, Malec.
The kiss heard around the fandom went a little something like this:
You really need to see the whole scene–or, actually, all of their scenes together, to get it. Plus, how Simon reacts to the kiss is freaking hilarious. I don’t believe for a moment that Magnus hasn’t seen The Graduate, though.
I have a growing collection of Malec YouTube videos (and Magnus videos), but I think this is my favorite:
“You never cease to amaze me, Alec.”
“Yeah. What’d I just do?”
Cake has become fandom code for sex, btw. Or at least heavy smoochies. My understanding is that it’s inspired by the song “Cake by the Ocean” by DNCE.
